Flamenco Arana to perform at Nations of San Diego

Last Monday I met up with Flamenco Arana dancers at Dance Connection in Pacific Beach for their dance rehearsal for their upcoming performance at the Nations of San Diego International Dance Festival in Coronado.

They will perform Zorongo y Peteneras with flamenco guitarist Edward Fishwick, Emilia Eneva Al Cante, Marta Senturia, Carrie "La Chispa", & Kristina Cobarrubia Al Baile and Palmas by Penny Dillon.

See them at the Nations of San Diego International Dance Festival on February 10th (8pm), 11th (2pm), and 12th (2pm). Nations of San Diego is held at the Coronado School of the Arts
located at 650 D Avenue, Coronado, CA 92118.

John The Revelator by Sir Sultry

Here's the latest installment from flamenco guitarists Ethan Margolis and his solo project "Sir Sultry". Sir Sultry is a combination of flamenco rhythms and American music be it blues, jazz, rock or original material.

This video, directed by Jeff Katz, is a cover of a popular old blues tune called 'John the Revelator' featuring phenomenal bass player musician Reggie Hamilton. Ethan says "I added some flamenco 'nudillos' or 'knuckles' and gave it a swing por tangos. Reggie and I have been playing together in L.A. for about six months now".

The 4 song EP 'Musician Hearts' was just released and is now available on iTunes.

Ethan Margolis will performin San Diego on January 28th with Espiritu Flamenco: "A mi Aire" flamenco dinner show at Tango del Rey in Pacific Beach.

Fanny Ara began her dance studies at age three, studying ballet and Contemporary dance at the Irene Popard school located in St. Jean de Luz in the French Basque country. In 1991 she began training in Spanish classical dance with Catalina Gommes and for the next ten years she traveled regularly to Madrid to study with maestros Isabel Quintero and Antonio Najarro. In addition to her studies in dance, she studied piano at the Bayonne School of Art for 11 years. She attained a BA in literature with a specialty in music. After graduating from the Bayonne School of Art, she relocated to Sevilla and Madrid. Over the next two years there, she pursued intensive flamenco studies with Juana Amaya, El Torombo, Manolo Soler, Hiniesta Cortes. While in Spain, she was also accepted into the prestigious academy of Mario Maya, and worked in tablaos in Madrid ("Al Andalus" and "El Juglar"). Fanny has become an established and important performer in the Bay Area. As a company member of Caminos Flamencos, she has shared the theater stage with artists such as Antonio de la Malena, Manuel de la Malena, Juan Ogalla, and Domingo Ortega. Fanny has been recently nominated in the category of Most Outstanding Individual Dancer (2006) from the Isadora Duncan Dance Awards. In June 2007, she presented her program "Magia Flamenca" in Washington DC with critical acclaim. Last summer Fanny created her most recent work "A traves de sus ojos" where Renne Renouf reviewed her as "always elegant, the reach of her arms generous, frequently evoking unseen forces, body occasionally concave , legs striding in earthy response yet with vulgarity absent, fingers spread in exclamation to the rhythms, leaving the stage abruptly, provoking a gasp of delight.".In Spring of 2011, she presented her latest performance, "Garlochi," at the Montalvo Center of Art, after touring the US and Mexico.

Flamenco Dancers, A Sculpture Installation

Spent the morning in Balboa Park checking out the Flamenco Dancers sculpture installation by Russian artist Ilia Idelchik at Spanish Village. The two sculptures, which are a little larger than life size, stand tall and poised in the middle of the court yard. My girls had fun as they imitated the sculptures' dramatic posture. When we arrived, there was a guitarist playing some tunes... no he was not a flamenco guitarist.

Legendary flamenco dancer Angelita Gomez from Jerez de la Frontera will teach workshop in San Diego.

Angelita Gómez began her career in flamenco dance at the age of five with teachers like María Pantoja, La Gitana Blanca and Sebastián Núñez, all of whom are no longer with us, but who found a way to transmit to her many of the secrets locked away in the Jerez school of flamenco dance. When she was eleven she gave her first recital, and was already earning a well-deserved reputation as a child prodigy in some circles. In fact she already danced caracoles, mirabrás, soleás, seguidillas, tarantos, farrucas, bulerías.

During the sixties she performed with some of the leading stars of the era, including cantaores Terremoto de Jerez, Tío Borrico, Sernita de Jerez and El Sordera. In 1962 she won the Paco Laberinto Award for Bulerías at the Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco, a contest held in Jerez. Since then, Angelita Gómez formed part of many a flamenco formation over the years, both in Spain and in other European countries, and especially in South America.

Alongside her work as a dancer, she began to build a brilliant reputation as a teacher, giving highly popular Summer schools organized by the Cátedra de Flamencología in Jerez, as well as running her own academy. She retired from dancing almost forty years ago, and now dedicates her time to teaching. Right from the birth of the Festival de Jerez, her bulerías courses boasted immense popularity.

During her career she received awards such as the Jerez city council’s Award for teaching dance, a prize from the Federación Provincial y Local de Peñas Flamencas, gold medal at the first Festival de la Vela de las Nieves, held in Arcos de la Frontera... the list goes on. Jerez’s Cátedra de Flamencología recently gave official recognition of her talents as a teacher, presenting her with the national Premio de Enseñanza del Baile Flamenco. In 2004 the Festival de Jerez pays tribute to her on the closing night, in the show ‘Ayer y Siempre’, where the bailaora will return once again to the stage, alongside artists like her disciple María del Mar Moreno and cantaores Antonio Malena, Fernando Terremoto and Luis Moneo. Angelita is also featured in José Luis Navarro García ‘s book:“Paso a dos de Terpsícore y Talía. La Danza-Teatro Flamenca” and the DVD "Viva Jerez".

Some of the most accomplished dancers have received training from Angelita Gomez: Maria de la Mar Moreno, Antonio el Pipa, Andres Pena, Juan Ogalla, la Chique de Jerez, Ana Maria Lopez, Maria Jose Franco.

Flamenco Guitarist Corey Whitehead (Director of Guitar Studies at California State University, Fresno), who has recently presented "The Greek Origins of Flamenco: The Speculative Theories of Manolo Sanlucar, (a peer-reviewed article for The Journal of the Humanities, Vol. 9, 2011) at The 9th International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities at The University of Granada, Spain will perform his own works, created in his studies in Spain with Manolo Sanlucar, and will perform works of his past maestros, including Juan Serrano, Ricardo Marlow, and Manolo Franco. Also included in this program are a special alflamencada arrangement of works from Suite Espanola, Op. 47 by Isaac Albeniz.

Battle of the Dance

Recently our friend Marci Richards hopped on the I-5 and headed for Anaheim to catch a The Battle of the Dance performance. Below is her review, enjoy!

Battle of the Dance is one-hour and forty-five minutes of non-stop talent on stage. The performance has the flavor of Theatre, Broadway, and Vegas all wrapped into one show. It begins with a quick taste of salsa (and glimpse of Celtic footwork) in the foyer and then you are seated for dinner and the performance. The stage performance opens with narration to set the theme and story line. The dancing that ensues is predominantly flamenco and Celtic with a few other styles, too (Tango, Bollywood, etc.). The energy of the dances (via the dancers) stays at a heightened level throughout the performance.

The dances are continuous, transitioning between the different styles. The flamenco choreographies incorporate the manton, fan, castanets, baston, and bata and are classical in style. Not being as familiar with the Celtic dances, I would imagine the dances are classical in style, too. The individual interpretation and improvisational moments throughout the show give it uniqueness while it still has unity. There are “puro” moments, too, especially during the solos. Notable moments include vueltas quebradas and footwork by the flamencos, and articulation of feet/ankles and leaps by the Celtic dancers.

The performance ends in a dance-off between the cast of Flamenco and Celtic dancers with the lead male Flamenco and Celtic dancers performing their respective style of footwork and creating one sound; a very captivating ending.

The performance has no intermission; however, two unique (and unexpected) performers give the dancers a chance to catch their breath, a ventriloquist and a hand-shadow puppeteer. The ventriloquist is a master of his art, as there is no movement of his lips, jaw, cheeks, or any facial muscle while talking for the puppet(s). He yodels two different styles and does celebrity imitations (via the puppets).

The very talented hand-shadow puppeteer casts a variety of images on a screen using only his hands. Images include but are not limited to an elephant, two apes picking fleas off each other, a camel, and celebrity profiles (Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis, Madonna, Michael Jackson, etc.).

The performance is great for people of all ages, children, too. For those in the OC and LA area, it’s around the corner. For those in SD, the travel time to Anaheim is barely discernible with good company and the carpool lane. Don’t forget there are discount tickets available on Goldstar, 1-866-48-DANCE (code:GOA106), and via our talented LA-based flamenca, Lisa Solar who dances in the opening Salsa performance, as well as the flamenco and Bollywood numbers. Speaking with Lisa after the show, the solos and some of the flamenco choreography can change between performances, pending the lead dancers, mood, tone, etc., but that’s what “the dance” is all about, expression.

"La Chimi" Featured in Two Articles

Over the weekend I found two great articles on La Chimi, one in English and one in Spanish. Enjoy!

In the first article entitled 16 year old Celia Romero Algaba wins the Lampara Minera by simplynetworking.es, a web portal for foreigners who live in Murcia, we have access to the two beautiful photos featured here and to the sentiment of disappointment with the judges decision. We can tell they were cheering for our Lakshmi. Here's an excerpt:

"No-one knew for certain which category caused the delay, but it took 15 minutes for the judges to announce the winners, the crowd restless as at 3.10am, most of us were a little peckish, torn between the desire to sleep, eat tapas and have a beer or find out who won.

The old sages on the bench said there were two difficult decisions, the dance and the miners lamp. The intake of breath and less than effusive clapping meant that there was less then enthusiasm for the dance decision, the consensus on the beach being that it should have gone to the dancer who came second, a strikingly imposing American dancer called Lakshmi Basile.

Whilst for us, personally, she stood head and shoulders above the winner, the greatest loss was for La Unión and the Region of Murcia who would undoubtedly have received a great deal of International attention, particularly from America, should one of their citizens have won at La Unión. But never mind, judges aren´t marketeers, although it was tragic for the region that she didn´t win and they missed out on all that lovely free, positive publicity."

Our talented guitarist John Moore, AKA Juan Moro has been working on the English translation of "Las mil y una historias de Pericon de Cadiz." Here's the scoop!

Translation of Pericón! The marvelous book 'Mil y una historias de Pericón de Cádiz' will be available in English translation within the next year (Inverted-A Press; inverteda.com).

This book is a collection of witty stories by the famed singer and storyteller - it takes the reader to the streets of Cádiz during the early 20th century and chronicles the gracia, fiestas, hunger, and terror of a period that spanned the end of Alfonso XIII's reign, the second republic, the civil war, and the Franco dictatorship - all through the eyes of a street-wise flamenco singer. There is history, culture, flamenco history, and lots of gracia - the book is a jewel on many different levels!

Collected and arranged by José Luis Ortiz Nuevo, it was published in 1975, out of print for years, and re-edited in 2008, when it won deflamenco.com's 'best flamenco book' award.

Over the past few years John Moore (Juan Moro) has been working on the translation - it includes copious footnotes and appendicies, explaining the historical and cultural references, short bios, and a glossary describing flamenco terms and places. While in Spain last month he met with Ortiz Nuevo and signed the translation contract. More information on the release date will follow as it becomes available.

Earlier this week, Los Angeles-based flamenca, Lisa Solar was spotted in San Diego during the workshop with Maestro Jose Galvan. Heck yeah, she was right there in the same class with me. Both of us sweating bullets while trying to get the Maestro's technique.

As you might remember, Lisa was the principal dancer at the San Diego Opera 2009 production of Don Quixote. She rocked that show! She was also one of the "Sultresses" at the Sir Sultry production of Spanish Day: The Flamenco Rock Opera. You're starting to remember her, right?

Lakshmi Basile, la Chimi, la tercera de los Basile, sin beca ni ayuda, en menos de un año ha llegado al escalafón de los dos premios nacionales de flamenco más importantes en España: finalista del Concurso Nacional de Córdoba y Segundo premio del Concurso de la Unión. Éso es hacer historia en el flamenco.

Los días previos
Lakshmi trabaja en su estudio, como un joyero, puliendo todo aquello que ha asumido en su aprendizaje. Hemos creado un buen equipo de músicos. Algunos (Jesús Flores, Enrique de Morón y Antonio Gámez) ya estuvieron con ella en el Concurso Nacional de Córdoba. Los nuevos (Juan Torres e Iván Carpio) se adaptan a la base creada. A fin de cuentas, nos conocemos desde hace años, hemos compartido mucho con ella, la confianza es mutua, los códigos no son ajenos. El objetivo es claro: darle seguridad para que se sienta arropada.

Ensayo de prueba en el Museo del Baile Flamenco: los turistas que pagan sus entradas no saben que están delante de una de las que en una semana será de las mejores bailaoras del momento.

Caravana a La Unión
Todo listo, los coches cargados de flamenco, flamencos y una flamenca. Esta noche nos medimos las fuerzas con los otros concursantes. Después de más de 500 kilómetros llegamos a la prueba de sonido. Se palpa la tensión en el ambiente propia de los concursos de nivel. A eso añadimos la intensa humedad. Se saluda a los conocidos, que son muchos, compañeros de camino, aquellos peregrinos del buen flamenco, el de la entrega.

Noche del viernes
Casi nos toca abrir la noche. Taranto, Envuelta en azul cobalto, la nieta de la guaraní deja en las minas el sabor amargo y trágico de las historias personales acrisoladas en el baile. Es puro nervio, depurando la técnica de la emoción. El público lo sabe. Luego, alegría. Y comienza a caldearse el ambiente. Tan bella y tan a gusto que los flashes de las cámaras parecen una tormenta de verano. Sigue la noche con otros artistas. En unas horas, a las 3 de la madrugada sabremos quién pasa a la final: Saray, Iván, Lakshmi o Lucía. Casi ninguno logra conciliar el sueño, y menos cuando pego el grito emocionado y comunico a los niños la noticia. Comunicación con mamá Piojo y la abuela Regina: botamos de alegría... Ya hemos triunfado en parte, ahora queremos más.

Sábado, la noche
Como buenos gitanos, la soleá casi ni la hemos ensayado. Es el palo fuerte de La Jefa. Planteamos como objetivo el crear una soleá gitana: tenemos material de Morón, Lebrija, Jerez y Sevilla. Nos rebuscamos los duendes y creamos una partitura aérea que le permita a Lakshmi darse el lujo de no tener que preocuparse.

Competimos con Lucía Álvarez Howard, la Piñona. Otro modelo de baile, otra escuela. No es la primera vez que se "enfrentan". Cosas de la vida.

Repetimos con el taranto, que sale incluso hasta más bordado, La cadera fluctúa a punto de descoyuntarse. Los cortes y ritmos son como de relojería suiza. Cerramos la noche y el concurso del Cante de las Minas de La Unión con la soleá. Desde la oscuridad, Lakshmi homenajea todos sus ancestros, a sus gitanas queridas, a sus viejas sabias, con el Conocimiento que viene del corazón y no de un título pseudoacadémico. Suena romántico pero es verdad: Lakshmi baila con fatiga. Ya lo dijo el poeta Félix Grande: su baile es de una alegría conquistada.

Luego vino la decisión del jurado de darle el premio a Lucía. El poquito (o mucho) de decepción lo regamos con los halagos sinceros del público. Lakshmi gusta, incluso más por ser californiana de nacimiento... y es justo congratularse por haber llegado tan alto. Es un premio de ella, de su gente, de los que hemos creido en ella sin ambages, con lealtades del alma.

Ahora viene el momento de compartir, de moverse por el mundo y sembrar contando la historia de un sueño. De vuelta a Sevilla, el cansancio de las emociones no aletarga el ánimo de cantarnos hasta el último momento.

Flamenca Sonja Moore in San Diego

Wow, I remember when I met Sonja, it was at a Greek Festival at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church. She was just a baby (I'm feeling a tiny bit old, LOL).

Well, look at her now, she has become a young flamenca. She is the daughter of San Diego-based flamenco guitarist Juan Moro and renown bailaora Sara Olivar. Sonja currently studies under the direction of her mother in the U.K.

Sonja will be making a special guest appearance on Sunday, August 14th, 2011 at Costa Brava Restaurant in Pacific Beach. Show starts at 7pm. Sonja will be sharing the stage with Los Angeles flamenca Helena and with Angelita Agujetas, Juan Moro, and Miles Shrewsbery.

Flamenco is passed down from generation to generation through its oral history and the careful training from its elders. From father to son, mother to daughter, uncles and aunts to nieces and nephews, from grandparents to their close-knitted community environment, flamencos listen to, dance, play guitar, do palmas, and sing everyday in the intimate setting of their homes.

Last month, San Diego flamenca, Melba Novoa attended the 24th Annual Festival Flamenco Internacional (FFI) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Here's a review of what happened then and a little of what to expect next year.

The 24th Annual Festival Flamenco Internacional (FFI) took place from June 9 – 12, 2011 at the University of New Mexico. Eva Encinias-Sandoval, the founder and director of the festival, and an engaged group of volunteers, family members, and students, again deliver a strong week full of exciting workshops, performances, and camaraderie.

Guests included Jose Maya, Carmen “La Talegona”, Fuensanta “La Moneta”, David Coria, Raymundo Benítez, and Maria José Franco, along with great musicians including cantaores Rubio de Pruna, David Sánchez “El Gayi”, Vicente Griego, Luis Moneo, guitarists Jesús de Rosario, Carlos de Jacoba, Eusenio Iglesias, and percussionists Miguel “El Cheyenne”, and Héctor Aguilar.

At FFI, one of the highlights is that there is something for everyone: from the “beginners block”, to the master classes with teachers of the stature of Eva la Yerbabuena, Antonio Canales, Manuela Carrasco, Amador Rojas and Rocío Molina, to mention a few. In addition to the workshops, it is a week to learn and enjoy flamenco in all its expressions. In addition to dancing, the committed performer can also gain understanding of flamenco with opportunities to learn cante, braceo, castanets, cajón, and guitar with accomplished artists from Spain. One of the main benefits of this festival is the opportunity to experience a different flamenco dance company every night with other flamenco enthusiasts and professionals. My particular favorite, the fiesta which takes place the last two days of the festival, the main guests get together for a display of soul, ability, and strength. This year was particularly special to see two exceptional performances by Carmen “La Talegona” and Fuensanta “La Moneta” with their two very different, but raw and exciting, styles. They definitely stole the show with their footwork, their corporal expression, and, in the case of Fuensanta “La Moneta”, the ability to tell a story and transform herself physically and emotionally according to the mood of the piece.

For some, attending the FFI has become a yearly pilgrimage, if you will, due to its accessible prices, distance, and the quality of the teachers. I met people from Canada, Japan, Mexico, and many states in the US including Puerto Rico and Hawaii.

Like other years, there is a flamenco contest open to everyone: dancers, guitarists, and singers. Members of the Yjastros regional flamenco dance company are heavily represented and, in several years, have taken the top cash prizes home. It is my desire that more styles and companies are represented in the future to see other styles and expressions. It is a spectacle worth watching, nevertheless, since many of the contestants are quite accomplished.
Next year promises to be a special one, being the 25th anniversary of the festival. Big names are to be expected, and even just for the pleasure of learning a new “pataita” or enjoying a full day of flamenco discipline, the FFI will keep you yearning for more.

Tinto de Verano, Alhambra Special Reserve 1925, jamon-wrapped dates, ox tail, gespacho, tortilla, and café con leche were among my favorite flavors that set the tone for the sensory rich adventure I enjoyed this Spring. Days of cobblestone wanderings from café to architectural wonder to siesta in the plaza led to nights of magical happened-upon events of music and dance.

In Cadiz, an evening began in a small neighborhood store where we met friends of friends; locals, ex pats, travelers, and shared a bottle of red wine as we struggled through broken English and Spanish and wild gesticulations to discuss the latest events and one man’s hopes and dreams for his two boys and their future. We all wandered a couple doors down to hear a free, standing-room-only concert of guitar, cante, palmas; the handsome male palmero barely adhering to the role of one accompanying the music and he allowed himself only two brief outbursts of passionate rhythmical dance. The concert ended before anyone was ready; we lingered there shoulder to shoulder, slowly draining our glasses and savoring the energy in the room until obligation pulled us away.

Feria was a happening of brilliant colors and ruffles; men in dapper suits and ladies in custom-made or rented Feria dresses of the oh-so-snug variety that accommodated very little movement other than Sevillanas and carriage rides. Juaquin the boat Captain from Malaga smuggled me into (private) Caseta #108 where Teresa and Jose Luis and I became Feria friends for life.
