LETRAS AND FLAMENCO LINKS TO STUDY:

Alegrias Cante:

1st Letra:
Que le llaman Relicario
No le llaman Caí (Cadiz)
Que le llaman Relicario
Porque tiene por patrona
La Virgen del Rosario
Porque tiene por patrona
La Virgen del Rosario

long coletilla:

Que con la luz del cigarro
Yo vi el molino
Se me apago el cigarro
Perdí el camino
Perdi el camino, mare
Perdi el camino
Que con la luz del cigarro
Yo vi el molino

2nd Letra:
El cielo me se nublo
Las calles me daban vueltas
El cielo me se nublo
El dia que tu me dijiste
Que nuestro querer se acabo
El dia que tu me dijiste
Que nuestro querer se acabo

short coletilla:

Que si tu mare me dice
A onde te via llevar
A darte una vueltecita ay
por la muralla real

Cante Links:

1)  The first one is Beni de Cadiz.  He is singing the same style of letras (with the coletillas) that we will be working on.  So, though the words are different, you will notice that the melody in the first letra he sings is the same as "No le llaman relicario".

2)  Beni is fantastic!  Look at how he moves his body "rematando" de cante with his arms, head, face, etc.

3)  Rancapino accompanied by Luis Postigo - so natural, incredibly rhythmic and melodic

4)  La Perla de Cadiz - considered one of the best singers por Alegrias of all time.  Amazing.  Listen to where she puts the letras....she plays with rhythm and internalizes in a way not found in today's singers.

5)   Matilde Coral is an absolute master with the bata and with Alegrias.  Chano Lobato and Rancapino sing.  Incredible!!!

6)   Chano Lobato.  Incredible voice, use of compas and rhythmic quality.  His accents are unmistakeable.

Bata de Cola:

Patricia Guerrero.  Lovely use of the body, bata and arms.  (PS The last section in the first clip is Buleria not Tangos - someone messed up when labeling the clip.)

Here is Concha Jareño doing her thing with the bata.  Incredible.  Amazing.  She is the one who won the Matilde Coral prize in Cordoba two years ago.  She is also a disciple of my teacher, Yolanda Heredia.  The first clip is of her winning performance in the festival.

In the following clips Concha has loosened up and is now nurturing her own personal style.  Very modern use of the arms.  I love the ease with which she moves the ata and she incorporates her upper body.  Total relaxation as she tears through her movements.  Beautiful.
