A Brief Conversation with Juanita Franco

By Sol

Juanita Franco

I met Juanita Franco in the early 90's when she used to perform at Cafe Sevilla in downtown San Diego. It was around that time that she opened up her first dance studio, the Juanita Franco's Academia de Baile Español on Morena Blvd. It soon became happening spot for those of us wanting to learn about Flamenco.  Such was her success that she had to expand and move the studio to its current, bigger, location on Ashton Street, to accommodate the many classes she taught.  It was a one-woman show for many years.  Currently, she is the academia's director and continues to teach her dance classes four days a week.  She has such energy and love for flamenco.

I met up with this 72-year old flamenca and asked her a few questions. Check out the video and see what this Sevillana shared with SDFlamenco.

Catch Juanita Franco at the student recital Arte Flamenco,  A Celebration of Flamenco Dance on March 17th & 18th at the Salvation Army Kroc Center, Joan B. Kroc Theatre.  And as Juanita says "support Flamenco in this town!"  Ole Juanita!

ABOUT MANUEL DE LA CRUZ

The blood of Cordoba, Manuel was born in Montpellier,France, but in his veins, the blood flowing is that of Cordoba. It is at this Andalucia capital where Manuel will take his first Flamenco steps with the greatest Flamenco instructors to live. Flamenco would enter his life the day he was born given that it has been a family tradition for years and a lifestyle. By the age of eight, Manuel would win his first Flamenco award. Profound and charismatic, on stage he demonstrates his tremendous rhythmic formations, vigorosity and sensible way of dancing.
Manuel began his successful career in the best Spanish tablaos such as Casa Patas, Palacio del Flamenco and El Cordobes. He continues to tour the most prestigious stages with artists such as Juan Carmona, Chispa Negra, Chicuelo, Esperanza Fernandez, Duquende.

Choreographer and instructor: Manuel's lead performances never go unrecognized. His solo acts in spectacles such as " Romancero Gitano" and "Barrio Flamenco" are brilliant. He has contributed to the choreography of these and many other shows around the world both on stage and television. One work that he is more proud of is his first creation dedicated to his father "El Emigrante", a moving tribute to Spanish immigrants in the post-war period. His recent work included a 5 year running piece "Flamenka", with much success both in London and Paris, as both lead dancer and choreographer. Manuel has been privileged to teach in the best studios in Paris, including of having the honor to teach at L'Opera de Paris. Manuel's passion is infinity for the art that makes him a fearless artist.

Flamenco Ink Drawings

by Sol

Solea por Bulerias, Ink 33 by Marga Carbonell

Wow, I just found these striking flamenco drawings and sketches by Barcelona-based artist, Marga Carbornell .  These drawings are raw, pure, crude, unapologetic, and so right on with the flamenco essence. With no embellishments and bordering on grotesque.

To view more, visit Carbonell's Etsy shop at http://www.etsy.com/shop/margacarbonell.  Enjoy!
